Choose Peace over Violence

By Kimatni D. Rawlins

It’s a sad disposition, but as long as humans evolve weaponry, we will continue to see our children, sisters, brothers, and friends killed in acts of violence, especially America, where fear dominates the narrative. The vehemence of fury is instilled and reinforced in our society from superhero movies to advanced gaming. Many say, "Guns don't kill; people do." But such deductive reasoning is blatant ignorance. Have we not learned anything from South Africa’s Sharpeville massacre occurring on March 21, 1960 that killed 69 protesters, including women and children for peacefully demonstrating? Or the countless recent acts of terror against fellow citizens that have stained the fabric of humanity.

People, until you find peace in your hearts, calmness in your souls, and overshadow anger, sadism, and rage, you will always endeavor to commit acts of violence against one another or the animal kingdom. Humans enjoy hunting, and some have no problem laying hands on our mothers, sisters, and daughters. Secondarily, the same domestic violence is tolerated by cheering fans of domestic abusers who happen to shine in the boxing ring or on the field. Moviegoers applaud for tribal warfare on the big screen, and companies spend billions on industries that support violence.

When will it stop? When we chose enlightenment over aggression, spiritual piety over destruction. Lift up your conscience because both the human race and Mother Earth are in peril. Namaste.
