Welcome to Jamaica: The Nomadic Experience

Words by Kimatni D. Rawlins

I'm a nomad by nature. The simple things in life ignite my passion. Water, sun, plant foods, family, friends, reggae music, nature, and animals -- in no particular order -- are the key ingredients to my happiness. For this reason, I travel to Jamaica a few times a year, especially in July for Reggae Sumfest.

The purity of the land, the positive vibrations of the music, and the enthusiastic spirits of the people illuminate me. And running the hills with the locals or swimming in the Caribbean keeps my soul and mind connected with the energetic movements of my body.

This year I invited a few friends, including photographer and "lover of life" Henri Fisher to the mystic island for some fun in the sun. Our stay consisted of daily adventure and "healing food" discoveries. Laying around at the pool is not our idea of nomadic exploration. We traveled the countryside in route to Kingston to visit the Bob Marley Museum at 56 Hope Road and Tuff Gong Studios; ventured South to Negril for veggie grub in the Cliffs at Rock House; and spent time in the bush of Montego Bay with Rastas while eating foods from their trees. We also made music with legend Chokey Taylor and cooked ital specials that satisfied to the fullest. Meditating while capturing the view of graceful birds that flew overhead was our dessert. Adwa and Island Juices became our daily habitat for nourishment.

Close your eyes and breathe deep. What do you taste? That's life. One Love!
